Ielts Speaking Test

IELTS Speaking

 IELTS speaking test

Greetings,

Phoenix IELTS Academy is the best IELTS institute in Mohali. We thoroughly train you for the IELTS Test.

Today we will talk about Speaking Module of the IELTS Test. It is the test to evaluate your English speaking skills.

Just like other modules, Speaking module is of 9 bands, but this test is conducted in a very different pattern as compared to other tests and is the shortest among them. Here, unlike other modules, an interviewer takes your interview to evaluate your English speaking skills.

The test is divided into 3 parts. The introduction round, the cue card or the monologue round and the discussion round.

  • Introduction- This is the first round of the test. The questions asked are more about the examinee and requires to be answered in short. Eg is “Who is your favourite family member?” “Why he or she is your favourite” etc.
  • Cue Card- Here, the examiner will provide you with a topic. You will be given 1 minute to make points for this topic and anther 1-2 minutes to speak on it. Always utilize the the time given to make notes properly.
  • Discussion- This round is very important as the examiner will take up questions that are related directly or indirectly to the topic in round 2. Here, detailed answers are expected for the questions.

Let us talk about some tips that will definitely be handy before and during the test. If you want to know more, then visit the best IELTS Institute in Mohali.

Tips:
  1. Before you go for the test, start practising speaking in English. Talk to your family and friends in English. This will help you to overcome hesitation.
  2. For practise sake, watch English movies that have subtitles, but remember that you do not have to copy the accent.
  3. Never try to copy any accent from other country, this does not impresses the interviewer. Rather, you can lose marks if the examiner detects any fakeness in your tone.
  4. When you enter the test room, always start with greeting the examiner. You can say “Good morning” or “Hello”. Always be formal in your greeting.
  5. Always be confident, but remember, being over-confident is also not required.
  6. Maintain eye-contact during the conversation-This makes you look confident and shows that you are interested to talk.
  7. First let the examiner complete his or her question and then start answering. Take 2-3 seconds to start with you answer, this looks natural. Abruptly starting your answer may impose that you have crammed the answers.

All these tips are really important and one should keep in mind all the points. You will surely do well in your test.

IELTS Listening Test-2

IELTS Listening Test

IELTS Listening Test

Hello once again..!!

In the last post we talked about the general pattern of Listening test. We also discussed what strategies you should use while attempting the test.

Today we will talk in more detail about different type of questions that we find during the IELTS Listening Test.

  1. Multiple Choice Questions- Here you will find 4 options to a question and you have to choose the correct answer. The most common problem faced in such kind of questions is that sometimes all the mentioned options in the question are spoken by the speaker.  Just because you hear it mentioned, does not make it a correct option. Therefore, be very careful while picking the correct option.
  2. Sentence Completion- These questions are also a type of MCQ, but they aim to complete a broken sentence.
  3. Short Answer Questions- In such questions, you need to answer according to the instruction. For example, you are allowed to write “two words and/or a number”. Thus, here you can either write 2 words + a number - eg: 4 butter buns OR you can write just 2 words eg: red flag, OR you can also write two number eg: 2, 4
  4. Map or Diagram Labelling or Flowcharts-
In case of a map, an overview map of a particular place will be provided on the question paper. During the conversation, there may be two people discussing about how to reach a particular place (for example, a student guiding another student to reach a particular department in the university)-So you would need to label the different name of the places/roads etc.
On the other hand, in case of a diagram, a diagram is provided on the question paper (eg, working of a mixing motor). Here maybe a teacher or an instructor is telling about the work process and you may have to identify and  label the parts or the steps named during the conversation.
Adding in this, a flowchart is set of instructions and you may have to fill the missing steps with appropriate words.

  1. Form Filling- Such kind of questions are usually found in the 1st section of the test. The information that needs to be filled consists mainly of a person’s name, phone numbers, dates and time.

Tip and Advice:
  • Whenever time is given to go through the question paper, always mark the obvious keywords that will help you recognize your answer.
  • Also, take care of the spellings, as a correct answer with the wrong spellings is considered as a Wrong answer only.

All these above mentioned questions aim at analyzing your listening skills. With the help of coaching at the Best Ielts Institute in Mohali, you can very well achieve your aim at Phoenix IELTS Academy.

For any assistance, please feel free to contact us any time.

IELTS Listening Test-1

IELTS Listening Test

IELTS Listening Test

“It takes a great man to be a good listener.” - Calvin Coolidge

Listening is a very important part of the conversation. IELTS Listening Test is a tool to test your hearing and understanding skills.
Here, you will have just 40 minutes (30 min-test and 10 min- to transfer your answers to the answer sheet) to prove your expertise in this forte. The test is divided into 4 sections with the difficulty level increasing with each section. Each section has 10 questions each.

Every section in the IELTS listening test has its own theme and pattern.
  • Section 1 is a conversation among two people. It is the easiest part of the test.
  • Section 2 involves a speech, also called a monologue, or instructions given by a person.
  • Section  is again a conversation between 2-3 people.
All the above mentioned 3 sections are divided into 2 sets which cover 5 questions at a time. Thus, this enables you to go through 5 questions at a time.
  • Section 4 is the final section and  involves a monologue. Here, you will be given only 1 chance to go through the entire section of 10 questions. The difficulty level is a bit high in this part of the test. But if you have practiced properly, then you will be through with flying colors.

That was all about the IELTS Listening, now let us move on to some minute details about the test:

  1. Once you settle down for the test, Firstly, check all your equipment so as to make sure that they are in good working condition.
  2. The test pattern allows you to take a quick glance at the question paper before the conversation in the test starts. Always utilize this time and go through the mentioned section quickly, this will help you to focus on the important areas of the talk. Also, do not miss the instructions on the question paper which mentions the way in which you need to give the answer (eg, they will ask you to write your answer in no more than 2 words and a number, therefore you are only allowed to write 2 words or less, along with a number)
  3. When the test starts, it is very important that you understand the accent in which the conversation is taking place so you do not miss the details. Thus IELTS listening practice is a very important aspect during your preparation. You can watch English channels which shows sub-titles. It is a very good beginners approach to understand various accents of the English language.
  4. When 30 minutes of the test-time is over, you are given 10 minutes to transfer your answers to the question paper. This means that during the test you are allowed to mark your answers on the question paper itself and in the last 10 minutes, you would be transferring those answers to the answer sheet.
  5. Always use a sharpened and a dark pencil to write the answers. Moreover, neat answers would be easy to recognize and shabby writing may not fetch you marks due to illegibility.
  6. To wind up, always maintain focus during the test. If you do not concentrate during the exam, you are prone to miss the important details that may help you in giving the correct answer.

We really hope that you are able to make the most out of this post.
All the best for your exam..!!

What is IELTS

IELTS in mohali

Hello Folks,

Today we will talk about “IELTS”..

What is IELTS…???

IELTS is the “International English Language Testing System”. It is the most well known english test throughout the world.

IELTS analyses your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in English. It is to make sure that one is well- versed with English and would be able to cope up with the language barrier that one might face while migrating to an english speaking country from a non-english speaking one. Thus, it involves an overall analysis of a person related to the language.

IELTS is a one step forward to achieve your dreams. Sometimes, people consider it as a big hurdle. But, it is not that hard as they perceive it to be. IELTS require basic english knowledge though a good knowledge of Grammar rules will definitely give you an upper hand.

Why IELTS..???

To migrate to an english speaking country, one needs to pass an english proficiency test.

IELTS test is of two types:

The former test is taken by people who wish to to carry on their higher studies in an english speaking country. The pattern reflects the language used in the academic courses in such countries and ensures that you are ready to start with your studies there.

While the latter test is taken by people who wants to permanently migrate to countries like Australia, UK, Canada and New Zealand. While in other countries, General Training IELTS test score can help you to take part in training programs or attain a work experience.

Moving forward, both the tests are divided into 4 modules, namely, Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

All these modules individually carry 9 bands and their combined average gives you the final band scores. Therefore, it is necessary to score well in all the modules and you cannot skip any of these tests.

In the upcoming posts, we will be discussing all the modules in detail. So stay tuned..!!
